Our Trouts
The trouts´species were first introduced into Tierra del Fuego in the 30´s by John Goodall. He imported eggs and young trouts from Bariloche and Chile and they easily adapted and inhabited the rivers of Tierra del Fuego.
The well-known and most wanted “sea trouts” easily reach the weight of 12 kilos and even in some cases they reach 18 kilos, which it is most commonly seen in salmons. The pink look in its meat is obtained from the “Beta Caroteno”, found in sea food.
We can find at least four varieties of trouts in the fresh waters of Tierra del Fuego: brown trout, sea run brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout. You can find them in their each frequents zones.
According to our fishing guides in Ushuaia, brown
trouts abound more and more nowadays. It is worth mentioning
that it seems to exist a territoriality rule among these types of trouts,
since it is rare to catch more than one variety of trouts in a specific
spot.
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss):
This
trout has a small head, elongated bright and colorful body. Olive backs
and sides that look as if they've been plated in silver. Bright crimson
lateral lines and countless black spots from the head to the tip of
the tail.
Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis):
Distinguished
by its beauty and the combination of dark green marbling on its back
and dorsal fin and by the white and pink colour of its belly. Due to
its pink meat, it was named “Salmonid trout” or “salmon”.
Brown trout (Salmo Trutta):
This
trout is the most common one. It comes from Europe and it is the wildest
of all. This is shown by its aggressiveness when defending its territory.
Its stout body has made it break the record of size in every single
fishing competition. The biggest trouts that have been caught belong
to this type. Pieces of 14 kilos have been caught. They can be identified
by their brownish coloring and pink spots on the side and back.
Sea run brown trout:
For
some reason not yet discovered, the sea trout is a migratory form of
the common and widely distributed brown trout. It migrates to the sea
to feed and grow before returning to fresh water to spawn. Its weight
exceeds 10 kilos taking a silvery colour characteristic of marine fish.
Owing to its capacity of adapting to both mediums, it is considered
a Native Trout.
